In addition to employment opportunities, MEDA recruits individuals for short-term business/technical expert volunteer rolesThese are highly competitive opportunities, available to senior level, experienced individuals who would like to make an impact using their business and/or technical skills in an international development context.

Business and Technical Expert Volunteers are persons who are not MEDA employees, but are volunteers, engaged to provide specific business consulting and/or technical expertise for a particular opportunity. Most opportunities are 10-20 days in an international location, such as Tanzania, to perform specific tasks within a specified duration.  A portion of orientation, travel, accommodation and per diem costs may be covered for the selected volunteers depending on project budgets available and the volunteer agreement entered. 

In order to apply you must meet the following requirements:  

  1. Volunteers must be able to sign an agreement and commit to a work plan.
  2. Volunteers must have specialized skill & knowledge relevant to the opportunity.
  3. Volunteers must be fit to travel to international locations as required for the volunteer opportunity.
  4. Volunteers must be able to obtain the applicable visa.
  5. Volunteers must be eligible for MEDA emergency evacuation benefit program or provide proof of their own health, life, benefit and travel insurance for the opportunity.
  6. Volunteers must be available to attend scheduled cultural/technical and security orientation sessions at our Waterloo HQ for up to two days.

Volunteer TANZANIA:   To provide surge capacity to the Tanzania Enabling Growth through Investment and Enterprise (ENGINE) program’s business development services component. The selected volunteers will provide technical assistance and business support to selected business service providers.  For further description of opportunities, please visit our website. Volunteer flights, accommodation, per diems, mobile phone expenses and insurance costs are covered for duration of the Volunteer Tanzania program.

The ENGINE program is a four-year USAID-funded Feed the Future program awarded through the Volunteers for Economic Growth Alliance (VEGA) that aims to streamline and enhance many of the regulatory, informational, and financial channels that encourage domestic and foreign investment in the southern agricultural regions of Mbeya, Morogoro, and Iringa, and in Zanzibar.

Location: Tanzania (various regions)

Qualifications

  • Commitment to MEDA values of creating business solutions to poverty
  • Flexible, independent, self-directed, and motivated
  • Demonstrated skills and ability required to successfully perform the work assignment
  • Senior level (5-10 year minimum) business or technical expertise experience
  • Suitability/medical clearance for traveling and working in an international, developing cross-cultural environment
  • Bachelor degree in business, related field or comparable senior level experience
  • Previous international travel experience in a developing country is an asset
  • Ability to speak the local language is an asset

Areas of Business and Technical Expertise

  • Specialized technical skills and/or senior level business experience in an area in which a project can benefit from short-term assistance.
  • Desired areas of expertise include:  finance, banking, accounting, marketing, business management, product development, branding, ICT, IT, database management, mobile application development, entrepreneurship, organizational development, human resources, supply chain, logistics, agriculture, construction, women in business, manufacturing, youth.

We ask all volunteers to contribute to volunteerism and promotion of MEDA's work creating business solutions to poverty by sharing photos, blogs and experiences after the volunteer trip in their communities and on MEDA's website.
